Munich Re Chooses Hortonworks for Global Big Data Platform

Dec. 17 -- Hortonworks, Inc. (NASDAQ: HDP) announced today that Munich Re, one of the world's leading reinsurers, has become its latest customer in Germany. Multiple Munich Re business units will benefit from its newly created data lake platform which leverages Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) for specific business analytics use cases as well as big data applications.

"Munich Re has always explored innovative ideas in all business areas and is now putting even more emphasis on those efforts," says Franz Koppold, head of the IT department for business intelligence at Munich Re. "HDP is a core component of our infrastructure design that will allow us to gain more insight by combining internal and external data to thereby develop innovative solutions for our customers."

One factor leading Munich Re, a global reinsurance company headquartered in Munich, to select Hortonworks was its strong partner ecosystem. In particular, its partnership with SAS enables Munich Re to benefit from the power of Hadoop-powered data storage combined with the processing power of SAS Analytics. Hortonworks and SAS have worked together to deliver faster, more efficient, unconstrained analytics to all data. Additional factors influencing Munich Re's decision include Hortonworks' leadership position in the Hadoop community, 100% open source strategy and strong engineering team composed of the largest number of Apache Hadoop committers.

Data Lake Application and New Technologies

Munich Re will adopt HDP as its global big data platform, which will provide a cost-effective and technically advanced way to meet big data challenges that exist within the reinsurance industry. The data lake platform operates by accessing and storing a number of different external and internal data sources, to perform different transformations on data and simultaneously analyze even extremely large quantities of data.

Munich Re is embracing the versatility of HDP, which can be deployed on premise or in the cloud, and virtualized, in addition to the system's ability to deploy and deliver results rapidly. With Munich Re, HDP will cater to a variety of workloads, including SQL with Apache Hive, Apache Spark and Apache Solr. HDP delivers the flexibility required to meet Munich Re's most challenging requirements.

"Organizations like Munich Re are selecting Hortonworks Data Platform for its Hadoop journey because of the platform's focus on enterprise readiness and being 100% open source," said Andy Leaver, vice president of international operations at Hortonworks. "HDP delivers the flexibility and enterprise capabilities needed by Munich Re to run its most challenging big data use cases and applications."
