AI Career Notes: August 2020 Edition
In this monthly feature we bring you up to date on the latest career developments in the enterprise AI community -- promotions, new hires and accolades:
The SEMI Foundation appointed Katy Crist to the board of trustees. She currently serves as director of marketing and communications at Tokyo Electron Limited and co-chairs the SEMI Workforce Development/Diversity & Inclusion Council.
"It has been an extraordinary privilege to partner with the SEMI Foundation Board," Crist said. "Over the past several years, I've had an intimate look at the SEMI Foundation's work to tackle the most substantial challenges facing our industry – talent crisis, industry image, and D&I. As a member of the Board of Trustees, I look forward to working more closely with the Foundation to strengthen our industry across these and other critical issues."
NVIDIA appointed John Dabiri, a centennial professor of aeronautics and mechanical engineering at the California Institute of Technology, to its board of directors. Before Caltech, Dabiri spent four years at Stanford University as a professor of civil and environmental engineering and mechanical engineering.
Dabiri leads the Dabiri Lab, which conducts research at the intersections of fluid mechanics, energy and environment, and biology. Dabiri was awarded MacArthur Fellowship in 2010 for his contributions to theoretical engineering. He has also received the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award and a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers.
Cerebras Systems appointed Hiromasa Ebi as country manager to head the newly created subsidiary named Cerebras Systems G.K. in Tokyo, Japan. Ebi is has a 30-year career in IT, especially in data management infrastructure. Before joining the company, he was the chief executive officer of Cohesity Japan KK.
“I am honored to join the Cerebras team and bring world-class AI compute to industries and companies across Japan,” said Ebi. “The Cerebras CS-1 is one of the fastest AI computers in existence. I look forward to helping bring this pioneering technology to the Japanese market and solving some of the largest AI problems in Japan.”
Aras announced the addition of Marc de Guiran to the company as chief revenue officer. As CRO, he will lead the company's market strategy and increase its revenue growth. Before Aras, Marc was head of Global Strategic Programs at AVEVA.

"To solve the complex problems that Aras is tackling, everyone must be involved in the solution. SiMa.ai announced the addition of Gopal Hegde to the company as a senior vice president. Hegde will be responsible for managing the engineering and operations teams. He has over 30 years of experience in leadership and engineering roles at companies that include Cavium, Calxeda, Cisco, Intel, and Acclaim Communications.
"SiMa.ai has a highly differentiated software-centric approach to machine learning and is poised to disrupt the $40B embedded Edge market," said Hegde. "The founding team has done a phenomenal job in developing essential technology building blocks, and I am very excited to join the highly talented team to help scale the organization and execute the ambitious roadmap."
Harsha Jalihal joins MongoDB, Inc. as its chief people officer and will be responsible for the business's human resources operations worldwide. Jalihal comes from Unilever, where she was vice president of HR. She also contributed some of her time to the World Economic Forum and co-authored HR 4.0.
"To oversee and shape the future of HR for a knowledge-based company that is growing as quickly as MongoDB is an exciting challenge," said Jalihal. "I'm looking forward to working with Dev and the leadership team to develop a people and culture strategy that is in service of MongoDB's business strategy, and to ensure the culture that makes this company wonderful continues to evolve to attract and retain the very best people in the industry."
Anuj Kapur was promoted from the role of chief strategy officer to president of Corporate Development & Strategy at SAP SE. Kapur will be responsible for the development and deployment of the company's strategies across its portfolio.
Kapur held various roles at Cisco and was named chief strategy officer before he left the company. Prior to Cisco, he worked Deloitte and Advanced Micro Devices. He holds an MBA from The Wharton School.
Marvell appointed Marachel Knight to its board of directors. Knight is senior vice president of Engineering and Operations of AT&T, Inc, where she is responsible for the deployment of mobility, IP, cloud, surveillance, restoration, and technology implementation of AT&T's worldwide network.
Knight has over 25 years of leadership experience that include serving at AT&T Labs, Technology Operations and Network Planning and Engineering. She holds a master's degree in information networking from Carnegie Mellon University's Information Networking Institute.
Eric Leblanc joins Scality as vice president sales international. He will be responsible for helping to advance strategic channel focus to maximize revenue across EMEA and Asia Pacific. Before Scality, Leblanc was vice president of Southern EMEA and India at Infovista.
"Scality's position in the market reminds me of my experience at Silver Peak," said LeBlanc. "We are on the same trajectory. With leading alliances that include HPE, Cisco, Microsoft, and Supermicro, our joint customer base boasts some of the largest deployments in the world. Scality is a sleeping giant that has worked hard on the fundamentals and will now drive towards world domination in scale-out file and object storage."
CUJO AI appointed Jeremy Otis to the role of general counsel. He brings over 25 years of experience practicing technology law in Finland and the U.S. Prior to CUJO AI, Otis worked as legal director for the Americas at Wärtsilä Marine.
"I am excited to join CUJO AI as General Counsel to support its next growth phase," Otis said. "The development and pace of change in cybersecurity have never been faster. I am convinced that my experience and background will benefit our efforts and goals in our success journey. I am looking forward to working with highly skilled and experienced colleagues at the company."
David Reeder joins GLOBALFOUNDRIES under the role of chief financial officer. Reeder brings over 20 years of financial and leadership experience in private and public organizations, including Texas Instruments, Broadcom, Cisco, and Electronics for Imaging.
"I can't imagine a more exciting time to join GF," said David Reeder. "I look forward to joining a world-class team, leading the finance organization, and contributing to the company's future success as it progresses to the next phase of its growth."
Excelero announced the addition of Henri Richard as a board advisor. Richard brings over 40 years of leadership experience in sales and marketing positions. He is co-founder of Carvault RRS and is the executive vice president of worldwide field and customer operations at NetApp.
"Excelero is addressing one of the most pivotal demands in enterprise technology today – building end-to-end, high-performance storage solutions for AI training and analytics workloads at any scale with maximum ROI," said Richard. "New workloads require new storage, and Excelero's groundbreaking approaches to Elastic NVMe have widespread appeal. I look forward to helping Excelero find new opportunities for growth."
Northern Data AG selected Stefan Sickenberger to serve as its chief operating officer to the Management Board, where he will be responsible for business-relevant functions, including operational processes and quality control. Sickenberger has over 20 years of experience in leadership positions, including the establishment of iNNOVO Cloud alongside Co-Founders Dr. Sebastian Ritz and Dr. Hermann-Josef Lambert.
"I am looking forward to my new assignment at Northern Data AG and the opportunity to further advance the Company's HPC activities," Sickenberger said. "Aroosh Thillainathan and his team have laid the foundation for one of the most exciting success stories in the German IT industry by managing to build the world's largest data center for HPC applications in Texas and winning major corporations as long-term customers. Northern Data has already established a reputation as an infrastructure provider for the rapidly growing blockchain industry. Now it's time to extend this lead further and expand into other industries."
Alex Starr was promoted to the role of AMD Corporate Fellow. AMD recognized Starr for his contributions to advanced emulation methodologies within AMD products. He has been with AMD for 15 years and is considered a leader in verification methodologies for SoCs, CPUs, and GPUs.
AMD Corporate Fellows are selected based on their contributions to the company and to the industry as a whole, including mentorships. Seven engineers hold the title at AMD.
