Instana Releases First Commercial Continuous Profiler for Production Java Applications

CHICAGO, Feb. 12, 2020 – Instana, the leader in automated application performance management solutions for microservice applications, has broken through another performance management and optimization barrier with the introduction of the first commercial continuous production profiler for Java applications. Instana’s release of their AutoProfile feature delivers always-on production profiling free of charge with its APM solution.

“Even as application platforms have evolved and new performance tools have emerged, the need to profile code to identify and eliminate bottlenecks and sub-optimal code has never disappeared,” said Chris Farrell, Instana Technical Director and APM Strategist. “Instana leveraged the technology from our StackImpact acquisition announced in December to create an integrated solution that has every profile needed for developers at any time.”

The new profiling functionality, available to all Instana users in the latest release of the company’s SaaS APM solution, automatically captures profiles continuously in production without impacting application performance or resource overhead. Like other performance entities inside Instana’s solutions, profiles are available to the unbounded Analytics engine, allowing patterns across multiple profiles to be discovered and analyzed together.

Unlike other APM solutions, Instana fully automates the entire lifecycle of application monitoring including application discovery and mapping, monitoring sensor and agent deployment, and application infrastructure health monitoring. Whenever an application or infrastructure change occurs within dynamic applications, Instana recognizes the change in real time, instantly adjusting its application service maps, monitoring thresholds and health dashboards.

The profiling capabilities released today are similarly automated and always available. AutoProfile attaches itself to the running process automatically with no restarts or reconfiguration required. This allows all application stakeholders across development organizations to get the exact data they need to understand how their code impacts overall service performance and where the opportunities to optimize performance and scalability exist.

Instana’s continuous production profiling, released as a Beta version today, is automatically available to all Instana users free of charge. The current release manages Java code, but profilers for other languages are planned for the near future. Learn more at https://instana.com/profiling.
