Robin Miles Appointed as HPC4Energy Innovation Director

Dec. 21, 2018 -- Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and Department of Energy (DOE) Offices of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), Fossil Energy (FE), and Science (SC) announce the selection of Robin Miles as the Director for the High Performance Computing for Energy Innovation (HPC4EI) Programeffective immediately.

The HPC4EI Program leverages the advanced computing expertise and HPC systems at the national laboratories to work directly with industry personnel to accelerate innovation in three pillars:

  • HPC4Manufacturing (HPC4Mfg) – Improving energy efficiency, advancing clean energy technology, and accelerating the competitiveness of U.S. manufacturers
  • HPC4Materials (HPC4Mtls) – Accelerating discovery and adoption of new materials that operate in extreme conditions for energy applications
  • HPC4Mobility – Advancing the discovery, design, and development of energy-efficient mobility systems

Nearly 70 projects have been funded to date with participation from nine national laboratories and approximately 38 industry partners.$22M has been invested in the program, which has utilized 650 million computer core hours at the national laboratories. LLNL leads HPC4Mfg, in partnership with Lawrence Berkeley and Oak Ridge National Laboratories, as well as HPC4Mtls, in partnership with the National Energy Technology Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Robin provides leadership for these pillars. ORNL is the lead for the HPC4Mobility pillar. Other national laboratories participate in all three program pillars.

Robin holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering (ME) from the MIT, a M.S. in ME from Stanford University, and an M.B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley. She is currently the Deputy Division Leader for LLNL’s National Security Engineering Division (NSED) and has been the acting Interim HPC4Mfg and HPC4Mtls Director since August. She has been central to the success of the program and will provide continuity and leadership as the program evolves.

Robin will work closely with Jeff Roberts, LLNL Advanced Energy Technologies Director, as he works with DOE and the national labs to expand the HPC4EI portfolio.
