Accelerating HPC in the Cloud with IBM and Rescale

Oct. 9, 2018 -- High performance computing (HPC) is helping enterprises across industries tackle some of the world’s most complex challenges, from helping a petroleum company handle complex fluid dynamics simulations for reservoir modeling to supporting automotive companies as they design autonomous vehicles to helping aerospace companies create the next rocket or airplane design.

When the potential of HPC is combined with the power of an infinitely scalable and secure cloud, enterprises across industries can realize the benefits of HPC faster than ever. The cloud can offer cost and time-saving opportunities for HPC workloads, leaving on-premises resources available for bigger workloads, as well as new opportunities for HPC users who prefer a cloud-native or hybrid environment.

That’s why IBM and Rescale worked together to launch HPC as a Service from Rescale on IBM Cloud. It enables enterprises across industries to fast track the execution of HPC workloads. HPC as a Service from Rescale is a new service designed to simplify and streamline the many steps required for running HPC workloads, ranging from infrastructure deployments to data input and from workflow management to accessing results.

Joris Poort, CEO of Rescale, explained why this work is so important:

“By integrating the global reach and scale of IBM Cloud with Rescale’s powerful HPC management platform, enterprises can focus on accelerating innovation and eliminate the complexity that comes with provisioning high performance infrastructure and executing HPC workloads across a broad portfolio of mission-critical software. Our long-term strategic collaboration between Rescale and IBM will continue to evolve to meet customer needs, including the future addition of IBM POWER9 processors as hardware selections for Rescale on the IBM Cloud.”

Customers can begin experiencing HPC as a Service from Rescale on IBM Cloud today and can benefit from:

  • Access to IBM Cloud infrastructure, including configurations with NVIDIA GPUs, to quickly deploy and scale HPC workloads
  • A simple way to view, filter and manage HPC workloads and resources all from a single management platform
  • Access to Rescale’s broad catalog of software packages, allowing for the use of the same familiar HPC tools across both on-premises and cloud environments
  • Increased efficiency with a consumption-based pricing model and activity-based costing tools
