Kainos Unveils New Healthcare Analytics Capabilities

Kainos has unveiled transformational new healthcare analytics capabilities in the next generation of its flagship Electronic Medical Record (EMR) solution, Evolve.

The new features allow unprecedented indexing and searching of disparate and unstructured patient information. As a result clinicians and other decision-makers will be able to drill deeper into patient data and identify less obvious trends, anticipating medical conditions before symptoms have emerged. This will mean more patients can be treated in the community or at home, before conditions have escalated, with clear benefits to the patient as well as on acute care costs.

The Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust, one of the earliest adopters of the Evolve EMR, is running one of a number of pilot projects based around ‘Smart Indexing.' This will bring historical patient case notes to life and combine these with other structured and unstructured data such as GP correspondence and results, so that clinicians and healthcare analysts can build up a more holistic picture of a patient’s medical background.

Mike Meers, Chief Information Officer at the Trust, commented, “This is enormously exciting. It will mean we can extract valuable insight from sources that were previously unsearchable, and combine this with data from all sorts of other clinical and non-clinical systems, giving us a complete, amalgamated view of a patient all in one place. Once we have that, we can start changing the way we deliver healthcare.”

The Smart Indexing capabilities are just the first phase of Kainos’s long-term strategy to introduce advanced analytics capabilities to Evolve over the next 18-24 months. Advanced ‘medical context’-aware search capabilities will be added next, allowing clinicians to automatically identify correlations between key terms and conditions.
