Blancco Introduces SSD with Freeze Lock Removal

Rapidly gaining in popularity for applications ranging from tablets to mass storage, solid state drives (SSDs) are predicted to make up 40% of the hard drive market by 2016, yet challenges have persisted with secure erasure of data from complex flash-based SSD memory. Today, Blancco announces a major breakthrough in the erasure of SSDs with the addition of automated freeze lock removal, a feature that opens access to critical firmware-based erasure commands in SSDs.

The first of its kind in the commercial erasure industry, the automated freeze lock removal feature in Blancco software will be of interest to IT asset disposal specialists (ITADs), recyclers and businesses that value security and efficiency in data erasure processes. The removal of freeze locks automates the thorough sanitization of SSDs to meet regulatory compliance and also eliminates the need for inefficient manual intervention in the erasure processes.

Blancco's SSD erasure method is patent pending and has been tested and verified by Stellar Data Recovery, an independent third-party and global leader in data recovery technology. Stellar employed their expertise to perform low-level and invasive testing,  while Blancco has also sought further endorsement through successful completion of the SSD test methodology offered by the Asset Disposal and Information Security Alliance (ADISA).

"We tested Blancco's SSD erasure method by attempting to retrieve wiped customer data from a range of SSDs," stated Kees Jan Meerman, Managing Director at Stellar Data Recovery. "A month of deep level invasive tests on each individual NAND resulted in no trace of customer data being recovered from any of the wiped drives."
