Apps for Manufacturers on the Rise with Help From the Cloud

Derek Singleton, who recently graduated from Occidental College with a degree in political science, is also a multi-faceted writer on a variety of topics including ERP software and manufacturing.  In his most recent article he discusses the future of PaaS for manufacturing.

Platform as a Service (PaaS) cloud development platforms are akin to the platform Apple uses that allows typical developers with a dream to develop apps for the public-at-large.

PaaS is catapulting the cloud into a whole new dimension, opening doors to new, customized, quick-to-launch solutions for manufacturers at a fraction of the cost – given that the platform work has already been done.

Good news for small & medium sized manufacturers (SMMs) according to Singleton; the current apps on the market are geared primarily towards these SMMs, as cloud computing is still wrestling with barriers such as raw computing power and integration needs.

Note the three apps for manufacturers, now on the market, that have caught his eye. Writes Singleton, “At the moment, these solutions are still reaching for functional parity with on-premise solution. However, cloud ERP providers are beginning to close the gap.”
