Clean Tech Sector Embracing Sustainable Design

Creating eco-friendly products starts with the design process.

What does sustainable design have to do with clean technology? For a primer on that subject, look no further than this recent article from Industry Voice.

NASA earth gravityLately, it seems you can't escape the "green" message, or marketing. But sometimes, a trend is pervasive for good reason. It's clear that a proactive environmental stance is crucial for the well-being of the planet and its inhabitants.

The quickly-expanding field referred to as "clean tech" includes everything from alternative fuels to energy efficiency as well as air and water quality. According to Erwin Burth of Autodesk, digital prototyping is a perfect fit for developing clean technology because it allows engineers to virtually explore a complete product before it is manufactured.

Burth explains that "innovators in the sector are seeking to transform our current infrastructure into one that addresses basic human needs — our need for light and heat, our need for water, our need for shelter, and so on — more intelligently, in a manner that conserves resources, reduces pollution and respects resource limits."

Computer modeling and simulation make it possible to test and develop the types of radical ideas that can make ambitious environmental goals a reality. Plus digital prototyping allows companies to make their mistakes on the computer instead of on the factory-floor, saving money, time and material resources in the process.
